FEMINISM AND THE SEX INDUSTRY
Emily Orellana
The sub/countercultures that we all did were by far my favorite out of all the other assignments we did. It was exciting to hear what everyone else had to say about which sub/counterculture they picked to research. Giving the students a chance to teach their peers seemed to make everyone respect each other a little more, too. No one had the same thing to say over again, and I really enjoyed being in class while these presentations were going on. In the future, it’d be really great if we did more projects similar to this one. Each day I had Cultures & Languages, and somebody presented I always left class with at least a bit more knowledge of the world around me. I was never bored or disengaged, either. Hopefully everyone else felt the same.
A really big reason I enjoyed completing this assignment so much, too, was because I was given the chance to research something I was really interested in and would like to tell everyone else about. To be honest, I think I could have done more to make my PowerPoint a little more eye-catching. But nonetheless, I still learned a lot about the history of the sex industry and what it meant for feminists worldwide. The thing that stuck out to me the most about what I researched, were the statistics about the people (mainly women and girls) who went into the sex industry. They were shocking and extremely depressing. Another reason I chose the topic that I did, was because I wanted to open people’s eyes a little bit more to the horrors of the sex industry and the people that are involved in it, how not all women that are sex workers actually want to be. It’s a very controversial issue, and I wanted my peers to take away a better understanding of feminism, the sex industry, and how the two different views can butt heads. I didn’t want to preach to anybody about my beliefs, rather I wanted them to make a more informed choice about their feelings on these subjects. Judging by the papers I got back, it seems to have worked out that way. Mostly everyone had something opinionated to say about my presentation. Even I was able to take away a better understanding of what I researched. I think I would be in favor of the sex industry if it weren’t just for men, and created by men.
CUNT POWER.
